Injection Mold Sample Approval: What to Check Before Production

A first molded sample proves that the mold can make a part. It does not, by itself, prove that the part is ready for repeat production. Before approving samples from a new injection mold, check the features that matter to the finished product—not just whether the part looks acceptable on the table.

Fit and function

Test the part with the components it will actually assemble with. Check fastening points, moving features, seals and any interface where a small dimensional change could cause a problem. If the product needs a functional test, agree on the test and acceptance result before approving the sample.

Critical dimensions and appearance

Compare measured dimensions with the current approved drawing. Identify which dimensions are critical rather than treating every number alike. For visible surfaces, agree on color, texture and acceptable gate, parting-line and ejector marks. Photographs alone may not show these details reliably.

Material and production conditions

Confirm that the sample uses the specified resin and color. Ask whether it was molded under conditions suitable for the planned production process. A trial sample made through repeated manual adjustment may not represent a stable production run.

Record any remaining corrections and review the next samples against the same requirements. Once the part is accepted, keep the approved drawing and physical sample as references for inspection and future production batches.

PlasticNavi reviews mold-trial samples for appearance, dimensions, assembly fit and function, then follows corrections before customer approval. Our mold engineering and tooling process is connected with injection molding production so approval decisions carry through to manufacturing.
